Trekking Nepal as a Female Solo Traveler: The proven safety guide

After completing my SLC (School Level Certificate) examination, I started my trekking journey from Ghandruk to Ghorepani Poon Hill as a Female Solo Traveller in 2009 AD. I still remember the ticket for Pokhara I bought from the bus counter of Kalanki buspark early in the morning. At that time, my excitement level had no boundary. I was so happy as I was going to travel Pokhara to start my Ghorepani Poon Hill trek.

Reasons why Nepal is the best country for Female Solo Traveler

Nepal is very safe to travel as Female Solo Traveler. Local people of Nepal provide good hospitality service. They treat their guest as God. In Nepal, guests are greeted with smile, saying Namaste to them by joining both hands together and welcome them by offering khada. In some places of Nepal like Ghale Gaau, guests are often welcomed by offering them red tika and marigold flower garland.

They make sure that they provide best services to their guest till they stay there. In the famous trekking region of Nepal like Everest Region and Annapurna Region, many teahouses and homestays are run by family. They offer you home cooked meals with authentic taste, clean rooms to sleep, they provide you the information about their culture and tradition. You will got opportunity to experience local people’s lifestyle in the Himalayan.

As a solo female traveler, if you need guidance while trekking to challenging region like Everest Region then you can hire experienced trekking guide who will lead you and ensure your safety while trekking. While trekking you will never feel you are alone because on the way will get opportunity to interact with many international and domestic travelers.

Is Nepal Safe for trekking as a Female Solo Traveler?

From my experience, Nepal is very safe for trekking as a female solo traveler. You need to plan wisely and you should follow the basic safety measures. You should research about trail difficulty of the route you have chosen. You should do pre trek preparation like breathing exercises to strengthen your lungs, going for hike in the regular interval of time, drinking plenty of water consistently to stay hydrated, avoid consuming alcohol at least one week before your trek start. Pre trek preparation is very important to make your trekking journey safe. It helps during acclimatization time.

Before starting your trekking journey, you should check weather condition. You should carry essential gears. You should carry travel insurance. You should know the local emergency number in case if you need help while you are trekking.

How to choose right trek for the Solo Female Traveler?

If you are beginner in trekking then you should choose moderate trek like Ghorepani Poon Hill trek. This trek offers you real Himalayan experience although it is a short trek. If you are intermediate trekker then you can choose treks like Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang Valley. These treks offer you more adventure than beginner friendly trek.

If you are upper-intermediate trekker then can choose treks like Manaslu Circuit, Everest Base Camp. These treks are more mentally and physically demanding and offers you stunning views of Himalayas. You will experience sense of adventure, lifestyle of local people of those regions. These treks also come with risk of altitude sickness.

Why mental and physical preparation are important before trekking?

As a female solo trekker, you should be physically fit for your safe trekking. You should regularly practice deep breathing exercises, walk regularly for at least two hours, go for hiking at least twice a month, sleep well, keep yourself hydrated and eat nutritious food. Hence, following these healthy habits makes you physically fit and eligible to trek safely.

Similarly, not physical preparation is enough, you be prepared mentally before you start your trekking journey. Sometimes, while trekking you may need to climb steep hill and you feel to give up. In this case you should be mentally prepared to see this difficulty as part of the adventure. You should practice positive self-talk to stay motivated to trek further. You should read personal blogs of experienced trekkers and talk to them in order to get insights how they successfully completed their treks.

Hence, both mental and physical preparation are interconnected to each other and plays great roles to ensure safe trekking.

How can you ensure safety on the trekking trails?

You should be aware about the trail difficulty, duration to complete your prefer trek, weather condition and altitude. You should always carry map and GPS (Global Positioning System) device. You should always avoid unmarked path and you should always follow official trekking route. You should carry first aid kit with yourself. You should wear good trekking shoes to provide support to your grip and ankle while you are walking on the trail. You should be careful from the animals like donkey, yak, etc while you are walking on the trail.

How to choose right teahouse to ensure your safety?

To stay overnight on the trail, you should choose teahouse which is frequently visited. Also read the recent reviews of that teahouse to make sure their service is good or not according to payment they are charging to you. Ensure that teahouse provide you safe drinking water, clean toilet and clean bedroom, hygienic meals, good ventilation and access to phone. Always avoid teahouse which is situated far from village and main trail.

Trekking solo versus hiring an experienced trekking guide

From my experience, if you are beginner trekker then you should not trek solo. As a beginner you are not familiar with the trail difficulty. You might not know to follow the trail sign. You may get difficulty to follow map. You may encounter unsafe trails. You may get difficulty in arranging right teahouse and transportation. You are not familiar with the trekking techniques and proper acclimatization techniques. So, I highly recommend you to hire experienced trekking guide if you are beginner trekker to ensure your safety while trekking.

If you are intermediate trekker then you can trek solo in the popular route like Annapurna Base Camp and Everest Base Camp. These routes offer well marked trails, many teahouses, communication facilities, medical facilities.

Even if you are solo trekker, you should hire experienced trekking guide if you are going to trek on remote region like Manaslu Circuit to ensure your safety. Route to Manaslu Circuit does not have clear marked trails and the trails are remote. There are very less teahouse and limited medical facilities. Hence you must hire experience trekking guide on remote region trek who is licensed by Government of Nepal to ensure your safety while you are experiencing adventure.

If you are intermediate trekker who is planning to trek Manaslu Circuit and searching for experience trekking guide? Then you can get detailed information about our Manaslu Circuit Trek package which is founder led trekking designed to ensure your safety while you experiencing adventure.
